A game-changing policy
I am absolutely delighted to announce the bold, ethical decision by the online selling platform Gumtree to remove the easy availability of catapults and slingshots via associated sponsored links on its platform. This is not just a policy update; this is a landmark moment for wildlife protection.
For the past seven months, we have campaigned to address the devastating impact of catapult misuse. While some may view these items as harmless recreational tools, the reality is often quite different. Across the UK, wildlife rescue centres, vets, and volunteers are dealing with the tragic consequences of animals shot and maimed with high-powered slingshots. From garden birds to squirrels, hedgehogs, and even protected species, the suffering caused is both heartbreaking and entirely preventable.
A shift in responsibility and ethics
Gumtree’s decision represents a revolutionary shift in thinking. It sends a clear message: access to these weapons of wildlife persecution matters. When powerful catapults can be purchased quickly and easily online, with little oversight, they can too readily fall into the wrong hands. By taking this step, Gumtree has chosen responsibility over convenience, and compassion over profit.
Protecting every life: wildlife, pets, and people
This move is a massive win not only for wildlife but also for domestic animals and people. We have seen cases where cats, dogs, and even members of the public have been injured by those misusing these weapons. The damage inflicted can be catastrophic, often leaving victims with life-changing injuries. Reducing availability is a crucial part of preventing harm before it happens.
Inspiring industry-wide change
We hope other online marketplaces and physical retailers will recognise this decision as the huge and necessary step it truly is. Platforms have influence. They shape what is normal, accessible, and acceptable in society. By refusing to profit from products that are so frequently linked to cruelty and antisocial behaviour, Gumtree has set a powerful example. We urge others to follow suit.
Naturewatch Foundation passionately believe that profit should never come before the protection of animals. Ethical responsibility must sit at the heart of commerce. When businesses acknowledge the real-world consequences of the products they sell and choose to act, they become part of the solution.
The road ahead: a movement for change
Today, we celebrate this progress. But more importantly, we recognise it as the beginning of wider change. Protecting wildlife requires collective action from charities, from communities, and from companies willing to take a stand. Gumtree has shown leadership. Now it is time for others to do the same.
I would like to thank the entire Gumtree team for facilitating this move, and particularly their CEO, Mr Andy Harper, for overseeing this decision.
Jim,
Wildlife Crime Manager
