What we're doing

We’re asking the Government to call time on animal testing by committing to replacement, investing in NAMs, and improving openness and transparency.

We’re ambitious.

We want the UK to call time on animal testing. To make that happen, we’re calling on the Government to do three things:
1
Commit to replacement

“reduction, refinement and replacement” (aka the 3Rs) is one of the core principles in UK animal testing legislation. Clearly, the most important of the 3Rs is replacement, which is the principle that animals shouldn’t be used in tests if an animal-free method exists. Too often, priority is given to refinement and reduction. We want the Government to acknowledge that full replacement is the goal and to commit to making it happen.

2
Prioritise the use and development of non-animal methods (NAMs)

NAMs have huge potential and the global market is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The UK has a fantastic opportunity to become a world leader in animal-free testing methods. But only if the Government and industry shares this ambition. We’re urging the Government to divert public funding and incentivise investment in these methods.

3
Engage in an open and honest debate about the use of animals in research

Members of the public are often shocked to hear that animal testing still takes place, particularly for things like chemical and household product testing. It’s clear to us that the Government needs to be much more transparent about the use of animals in research. That’s why we want Section 24 of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 to be repealed. We also want the Home Office to start publishing figures about animals who are bred for science and not used in procedures.

Making UK homes cruelty-free

Do you want to live in a completely cruelty-free home? Join our Paint With Kindness, Not Cruelty campaign and let's end animal testing for everyday products.

In 2015, the UK introduced a ban on testing household products on animals. But it’s full of loopholes and desperately needs to be reformed. Support our calls for a proper ban and sign the petition today.

Do you share our frustration that it’s virtually impossible to find cruelty-free decorating products, like paint, wallpaper paste and grout, in DIY shops?

We’re looking for home improvement brands to join our Compassionate Shopping Guide but we need your help. Encourage paint and decorating companies to makeover their values and go cruelty-free with our template email.

A Conversation with Chloe Bullock & Natalie Harney

Back in October 2024, we had the pleasure of speaking with ethical interior designer, Chloe Bullock, about our mission to make the home improvement industry cruelty-free! Chloe shared her experience in the industry and how she integrates ethical values into her designs, while Natalie highlighted the work Naturewatch Foundation is doing and how you can help.

The Compassionate Shopping Guide

The Compassionate Shopping Guide is a great way to find all your cruelty-free products in one place, but it’s also a way means to encourage other companies to come on board.

Our team contacts hundreds of personal care and household brands to make sure:

  1. They have a fixed cut-off date for animal testing.
  2. They’re not owned by another company (or part of a subsidiary) that tests on animals.
  3. They don’t sell their products in markets where animal testing is still mandatory.

The guide shows that lots of companies are doing the right thing and that there’s a serious, growing market for compassionate shopping.

What is the Compassionate Shopping Guide?

Our campaign manager Kate explains what the Compassionate Shopping Guide is, why it’s so important and how our supporters can help.

Explore and share the guide with friends

The easiest way to help is to use the guide yourself and share it with friends and family. It’s available online, or if you’d rather have a printed copy, you can get one in our shop.

You can also help by spreading the word to the brands you love. Remember, there’s no cost for brands to appear in the guide, so if they’re not in it already, why not ask them to join?

Of course, we can’t campaign against animal testing without your support. We’re working hard to end the needless suffering of mice, rabbits, dogs, cats and many other animals.
