Our Protect Animals. Protect People campaign centres around the unbreakable bond between humans and animals. Our pets don’t just share our homes; they share our lives. They offer comfort, companionship, and a real sense of purpose that can change us in ways we might not even realise.

Whether you live with a lively dog, a quiet older cat, or a tiny guinea pig with a big personality, caring for an animal has a profound, positive impact on how we care for ourselves. Here’s how.

1. Pets Give Us Daily Structure

Routines help us feel grounded. Feeding, walking, grooming, and simply checking in on our animals creates a gentle rhythm in the day. This structure is especially helpful during stressful or uncertain times.

Regular pet care encourages us to:

  • Get out of bed in the morning
  • Establish predictable daily habits
  • Feel a sense of responsibility and purpose
2. Time With Animals Lowers Stress and Anxiety

Research shows that spending time with pets can lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and increase oxytocin (the “connection” hormone). This explains that feeling of calm when a cat curls up on your lap or a dog rests their head against your legs.

Pets help us to slow down and feel more present. Their steady presence is an anchor when our minds are busy or overwhelmed.

3. Caring for Pets Encourages Physical Activity

Looking after an animal naturally boosts physical activity. They require daily care, such as walking or playing, which can be hugely beneficial for both our physical health and mood.

Even low-impact movement, like feeding your pet or cleaning a cage, can lift energy levels and release endorphins.

For many people, pets make exercise feel joyful rather than forced.

4. Pets Reduce Loneliness and Increase Connection

One of the most meaningful gifts animals give is their companionship. They provide warmth, comfort, and a sense of being understood.

Pets can also foster human connection. Dog walks lead to friendly chats with neighbours. Visits to the vet or training classes help to build community. Even online groups for specific breeds or species bring people together.

Through our pets, we often feel less alone.

5. Caring for Pets Strengthens Our Compassion

Animals invite us to practice patience and gentleness. When we care for them with kindness, something shifts internally: we often begin treating ourselves with more kindness too. Learning to nurture an animal can help us to slow down and listen to our needs as well as theirs.

And this compassion starts early. When children learn to care for animals from a young age, they grow up seeing animals as fellow beings with their own needs, feelings, and personalities. This early connection helps children to develop emotional awareness and learn the importance of gentle behaviour.

Children who grow up with these values often become adults who treat others with greater empathy, and contribute to kinder, more compassionate communities.

6. Pets Remind Us of What Matters

Animals live fully in the moment. They don’t hold grudges or worry about tomorrow’s to-do list. Their little gestures, like a wagging tail or a gentle purr, remind us to reconnect to the present.

Why This Matters

The Protect Animals. Protect People campaign is rooted in recognising that when animals thrive, people do too. Communities where animals are cared for are more compassionate, safer, and healthier, for everyone living in them.

In looking after them, we learn, steadily, what it means to look after ourselves.
