The Environment Act finally became law on Tuesday 9th November 2021, marking the start of the most ambitious environmental law of any country on earth. While far from perfect, this new law does include huge wins for wildlife with plans for:
- The restoration of natural habitats
- Cleaning up of the country’s air
- Increasing biodiversity
- New developments to improve and create habitats for nature
- Incentives for businesses to create sustainable packaging
- Improving household recycling methods
- Stopping the exportation of polluting plastic waste to developing countries
- Tackling deforestation overseas
The Environment Act will make us the first country in the world with a legally binding target to end nature’s decline by 2030.
Bringing the Environment Act into law
A HUGE THANK YOU to you and the 208,000 other people who signed the State of Nature petition and helped support this campaign. Government has now been persuaded to put this key protection into law which is a monumental win for wildlife in the UK. We appreciate your support in helping to make this happen.
This legally binding target guarantees action from Government to protect our wildlife.
But the fight’s far from over.
We need radical action from across Government to turn this target into reality. It will require large-scale investment to make good the chronic shortfall in funding for nature. It will require proper protection for the remaining fragments of natural habitat and space for nature to recover. It will need tougher laws to improve our air and water, as well as much better enforcement to ensure polluters are held to account.
This legal commitment to restore nature is however a landmark step forward that wouldn’t have happened without your support. Together we will win the fight for nature’s recovery.
Many thanks from all us of us here at Naturewatch Foundation and from the more than 70 other organisations who backed the State of Nature campaign.
