As part of our ‘Protect Animals. Protect People.’ campaign, we wanted to see what the 44 different police websites around England and Wales offered by way of advice to survivors of domestic abuse where there was an animal involved.
This could be either through the animal being targeted and hurt as part of the ongoing abuse or cases where the human survivor felt they couldn’t leave because the animals were part of their family. Sadly, both are only too common a situation.
We realise how much people rely on animals for emotional support, especially in times of stress and loneliness. We understand that many of those who are enduring abuse will stay to protect pets, or if they cannot find anywhere to care for their animal. And we know that staying behind is likely to prolong the abuse of both people and the animals.
When we looked in 2023, we were amazed to see that not ONE of the 44 police websites across England and Wales offered any direct help!
We set about the task of explaining why this was important through various communication channels.
As of now, we have managed to achieve updates to the websites of 40 police constabularies! That’s 91% – it’s incredible news! We’ve worked with police partners to make this happen and we can’t thank them enough.
But we still need four, because only 100% is enough.
These last four are:
- Avon and Somerset Constabulary
- Lancashire Constabulary
- West Midlands Police
- West Yorkshire Police
We will keep you updated through our social media when we receive any updates, and on our ‘Protect Animals. Protect People.’ campaign page.
