What are pet-friendly products?
A guest blog from Ecozone
Here at Ecozone, we know that keeping harsh and dangerous chemicals away from our furry friends is a top priority for any loving pet guardian, so to help with this we do our best to make pet-friendly cleaning products that contain no nasty chemicals. This reduces the likelihood of harming your pet if they were to come into contact with them. But what does it mean for a formula to be truly pet-friendly?
Cleaning products that do contain a lot of chemicals can have damaging effects on our pets. Common pets such as cats and dogs have a natural curiosity which can often get them into trouble. Dogs, for example, have a tendency to lick or chew things, and cats are known to drink from toilets and sinks. This curiosity puts them at risk of ingesting dangerous toxins like bleach or other cleaning agents that can seriously damage their health. They can also cause burns on paws or even in their throat or stomach if the product is swallowed.
Tips for keeping your pet safe
Don’t use products in excess
It’s important to note that, while our pet-friendly cleaning products are safer for your pets, it doesn’t mean they’re 100% safe to use when your pets are around. After cleaning, wiping down and rinsing will remove any excess product remaining on surfaces, and, in turn, protect your pet from consuming any potentially harmful chemicals.
Try to clean without company
Don’t use cleaning products with your pet in the room. You probably don’t want an animal running around anyway while you’re trying to clean but keeping them away from sprays and liquids while you clean is as beneficial for your productivity as it is for your pet’s health.
Safely store your products
Keeping your cleaning products out of reach in a cupboard – just like you would from children – is also advised. No matter how safe a product claims to be, it could be harmful if your pet manages to reach them.
Pet-friendly products to look out for
Bleach-free laundry liquid
Animals breathe faster than we do, which means they could be inhaling more toxins than us. Avoiding products that contain bleach is advisable when you have pets. A lot of detergents brighten your whites and enhance your colours with chlorine bleach, so look out for products that use more natural, plant-based alternatives like Sodium Carbonate Peroxide.
Pet-friendly toilet bowl cleaner
Pets are no strangers to drinking or playing with water from toilets but, unfortunately, many toilet cleaners, most commonly bleach, contain harmful chemicals. Not only is it good to opt for bleach-free toilet gels, but you should also avoid mixing products and chemicals. Mixing bleaches and toilet cleaners produces gas fumes that are bad for both yourself and your pet.
Ammonia-free cleaning
Ammonia, like bleach, is an alkaline ingredient, which makes it a great cleaning agent, but also extremely toxic for your pet. Ammonia can affect your pets through direct ingestion of the products or through breathing in the fumes, and it can be found in common oven cleaners and window cleaners.
Where possible, avoiding any cleaning products altogether is the best way to keep pets safe from cleaning products. Even pet-friendly products should be carefully monitored and used in moderation, so perhaps for quick clean-ups, try some products that only need water to produce an effective clean, like a microfibre cloth.
