Axing the Wildlife Crime Unit is a bad move! Let’s get our voices heard!
In July 2024, we launched a petition calling for the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, to step in and reverse the decision to axe their highly impactful wildlife crime unit.
Since then, hundreds of you have added your name and comments in support and I can’t thank you enough.
We have featured on BBC News, in The Times, on Times Radio, and live on Sky News covering this and have been met with silence from the Met.
Their silence is deafening!
Today, we approached Sir Mark Rowley’s office again and will shortly be sending a direct letter to London Mayor Sadiq Khan calling for a genuine understanding and analysis of the true consequences of axing this unit.
The ‘New Met for London’ plan, which triggered the end of the unit as we knew it, states, ‘We’ll improve our understanding of the threat and use it to tackle the criminals causing the most harm in communities.’
With the global wildlife trade, often transitioning through Heathrow airport, being the 4th largest international crime, how can a unit so successful in combating organised criminality be tossed aside? The suffering of vulnerable communities and animals worldwide cannot be underestimated.
Help us help them. The dedicated, experienced and incredibly skilled officers need us. People and animals need us.
Please continue to send us your comments. We will get them heard.
