It’s time to end the era of animal experiments in the UK

13th February 2024

Today, Naturewatch Foundation has joined forces with leading animal groups across the UK to deliver a simple message to political parties: it’s time to end the era of experiments on animals in the UK.

Millions of tests are carried out on animals in the UK each year. These often cause pain, suffering and distress. We – the public – want more to be done to end animal experiments for good. But there isn’t a national plan for making that happen.

We want that to change.

In a letter to party leaders, we’re calling on each of the UK’s political parties to commit to developing a plan to phase out animal testing and adopt superior, animal-free technologies as part of their manifestos.

The letter has been signed by Animal Aid, Animal Defenders International, Animal Free Research UK, Cruelty Free International, Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments, Humane Society International/UK, OneKind, Naturewatch Foundation and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals UK.

As a group, our message is clear: “The benefits to animals, science, public health, and the economy of eliminating or replacing animal tests with advanced non-animal methods are widely recognised.

“Ahead of the next election, we are calling on all political parties to commit to developing a nationwide roadmap for phasing out all experiments on animals… Only then can the UK achieve its goal of becoming a world leader in science.”
