For so many of us, animals are not “just pets”. They are part of our family. They are there in the quiet moments, the difficult days, and the joyful ones too. Purple Paw is about celebrating that special bond between people and their pets, the relationship that brings comfort, connection and meaning to everyday life.

Around 60% of households in the UK share their lives with a pet, yet the importance of that relationship is often overlooked. Purple Paw exists to change that, by shining a light on just how much animals give us, and why that bond matters.

Pets, Companionship and Connection

Many people experience loneliness at some point in their lives, and for some it can feel overwhelming. Pets offer constant companionship, someone to talk to, care for, and come home to. They don’t judge, they don’t ask questions, they’re simply there. For many people, especially those living alone, managing mental health challenges, or facing difficult times, an animal can be a lifeline.

Pets and Wellbeing

We know that animals can make a real difference to how we feel. Spending time with pets can reduce stress and anxiety, help us feel calmer and safer, and give structure to our day. For some people, a pet is the reason they get out of bed in the morning or step outside for fresh air. For others, they are a source of comfort during grief, illness, or emotional pain.

Pets, Families and Everyday Life

A woman crouches beside a toddler in a sunny garden as the child gently pets a brown chicken the woman is holding. Another white chicken pecks at the grass nearby, and a cat stands in the background.

Pets also play a big role in family life. They help children learn empathy and kindness, bring comfort during times of change, and create shared moments of happiness. Beyond our homes, pets help us connect with others, a friendly chat on a dog walk, a smile from a neighbour, a sense of belonging in our community. Seeing a dog or cat always makes my heart smile, and I usually talk to them before their human, because we all know who’s often really in charge.

What Purple Paw Is About

Purple Paw is about recognising and celebrating everything that pets bring to our lives. It’s about acknowledging that caring for animals also supports human wellbeing, and that when this bond is protected, both people and animals thrive.

Protect the bond. Celebrate the connection.

Protect people.”
I’m deeply grateful to Jess Brown-Fuller MP for being the first politician to support this campaign, and for sharing a rather wonderful story about a certain chicken called ‘Bobby’.
