Spring is just around the corner
Lighter days are coming, and the daffodils are out. Isn’t it refreshing to be surrounded by so much hope and new life after what can often feel like a long and dark winter season?
I wish we could all just feel pure joy at the new life born amongst our wildlife in Britain, but it is all so often tinged with disgust at the persecution that blights the wonder of new life.
You may have all seen the horrendous video footage leaked showing the barbaric behaviour of members of the Avon Vale Hunt literally throwing a fox to its truly abhorrent final moments. This behaviour isn’t new, it’s been going on for centuries. However, still to this day in modern day 2023, it is still taking place – perhaps somewhere close to you?
We stand strongly with our partner agencies to condemn the behaviour of those who illegally hunt any wild mammal in the UK and are proud members of the newly launched anti-hunting coalition.
Together we are strong, together we will see change and together we will protect British wildlife.
I’ve had the pleasure this week of attending the Great British Spring Clean parliamentary launch with some great friends and colleagues devoted to keeping our environment clean and safe for us and the wildlife we live amongst.
It can be as sparkling as we could ever dream, but with wildlife persecution still rife in our communities, it can be difficult to see the positivity amongst all the darkness.
Our Make Wildlife Count campaign continues, and I also sat on the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare Wildlife Crime roundtable in parliament with some other key partners this week. Along with your views (many, many hundreds of personal comments!) I briefed decision makers on why it was vital that we see wildlife crimes made notifiable, and to finally eliminate the ‘miscellaneous’ attachment policing has to wildlife crime.
Their suffering is immeasurable, the crimes must not be.
