The UK is home to a rich tapestry of wildlife. From the magnificent aerial displays from our birds of prey to the smallest mammals minding their own business in our gardens, UK wildlife is still under threat.
England and Wales have the least effective wildlife crime legislation in the UK
It’s a fact that wildlife in England and Wales have weaker levels of protection than elsewhere in the UK. So, this February, we are relaunching our Make Wildlife Count campaign.
Why? Because successive governments have failed to ensure effective legislation to deter wildlife persecution, protect wildlife and provide our police forces with the correct tools for the job!
Our courts have limited sentencing powers, and irrespective of their desire to prosecute, their hands are tied and constrained by the weak judicial outcome options.
Give wildlife the protection it deserves
Now is the time to stand up and be a voice for the voiceless. We are calling on the public and our elected MPs to show their commitment to wildlife. One of the most effective ways to reverse this damage and safeguard our natural heritage for future generations is through robust, effective legislation and policy changes.
For example, the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981 has been a key tool in safeguarding many species. However, moving into an era of fast-changing environmental challenges, we must rethink and strengthen the laws designed to protect wildlife. Many issues facing today’s wildlife weren’t anticipated in past legislation. We need to recalibrate our laws to ensure they adequately meet the needs of wildlife and ecosystems.
Changing wildlife legislation in England and Wales to better protect wildlife is crucial to safeguarding our natural world for generations to come. It’s not just about saving individual species—it’s about preserving the intricate web of life that sustains us all. With bold, forward-thinking policies, we can ensure that the wildlife we cherish today will continue to thrive tomorrow. The time for change is now; it’s time to Make Wildlife Count!
