2022’s World Animal Day grant winner has been announced!
In coordinating World Animal Day every year on October 4 Naturewatch Foundation seeks to give all animals and their advocates a platform to improve global animal welfare. As a part of the work that Naturewatch Foundation does to coordinate this special event and make it as impactful as possible, every year a grant is given to an existing World Animal Day ambassador to use in their animal welfare work.
This year the decision was as hard to make as ever, with so many organisations setting out ambitious plans all promising to make a meaningful difference for animals.
One very detailed application caught our eye this year, however, and we’ve been delighted that our grant winner for the 2022 World Animal Day grant was gifted to Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (LSPCA) Malawi!
Who are LSPCA Malawi?
Formed in 2010, LSPCA were the first animal welfare charity in Malawi and over the last decade, this dedicated organisation has tackled a huge range of animal welfare issues, such as rabies, donkey welfare and chicken transportation and welfare.
But the proposed project put forward for the grant was LSPCA’s work tackling the roadside sale of animals under low welfare conditions. Sadly, for many years the organisation has witnessed hundreds of young animals being sold on roadsides prematurely, whilst also suffering from untreated preventable diseases.
The LSPCA plan to collaborate with police and local authorities to confiscate animals being sold in poor condition, as well as prosecuting offenders to discourage others from joining this profession. Working in cooperation with authorities in the best interest for animals is something that World Animal Day coordinators, Naturewatch Foundation, also aim to do – just one of the reasons this grant stood out so much to us!
